Asturias is situated in the
north, in the humid or green Spain. It is bordered on the north
by the Cantabrian Sea, on the west by Galicia and on the east
by Cantabria. In the south, the Cantabrian Cordillera separates
it from Castile and Leon.
An uneven orography characterizes its territory that passes
of the 2000 meters in the Cantabrian Mountain range, until the
level of the sea, with a width, north measure to south that
oscillates among the 70-80 kms in the center and west, to the
20 kms in the east.
From the geologic point of view, Asturias belongs to the Iberic
Mountain Mass and this located in the oceanic slope of the Cantabrian
Mountain range. |
Asturias has a vegetation generous and varied
dice the differences of the land and the different areas of influence
of the sea and the mountain. In the near area to the coast dominate
the mixed forests of chestnut tree and oak, the fresh forests of hazel
tree and ash-tree, and the riverside groves with alder tree and willow.
More recent it is the introduction of species
of quick growth, as the pine and eucalyptus. In the area of half mountain
they dominate the mixed forests of there is and white oak. Ascending
in height is the "rebollo", the birch and the holly. In
the mountain top, the extreme conditions impede the growth of arboreal
areas, these they are substituted by grassland and underbrush.
The fauna is
of an extraordinary diversity and it is located mainly in the
mountainous areas, in the parks and natural reservations in
whose forests, survive species protected and in the wild, and
already almost extinguished in all Europe: bears, capercaillies,
chamois, wolves, day and night birds of prey, otters and another
smaller varied fauna (birds, reptiles, amphibians....)
These species constitute an authentic natural treasure. The
fauna of the rivers and lakes (salmon, trout, "reo",
eels) they have a great gastronomic appreciation and a great
tourist attractiveness. |

If the Asturian geography is surprising, its
gastronomy is no less than that, rich and varied. It can be tasted
in restaurants and cider bars, besides a great deal of bars of folkloric
atmosphere, distributed all along the region. Cooking, very traditional,
is firmly rooted to the original places of its products, such as the
coast or the interior areas in the west and in the east.
