POPULAR FESTIVAL

The current festivals come, mostly, from the medieval times such are San Mateo, the Balesquida and the “Bollu” Tuesday (bread roll Tuesday) festivals.

San Mateo is held on May 21st and comes from the festivals and entertainments that were organizes in the medieval Oviedo to entertain the numerous pilgrims who were on their way to the cathedral.

Aside from the mentioned ones, there are other religious festivities like the Corpus Christi or Palm Sunday. Among the secular festivals there is the “Antroxu”, carnival, San Juan’s bonfire night and the Ascension. We mustn’t forget to mention an example of gastronomic ones as the Desarme may be.

GASTRONOMY

The Fabada is the Asturias dish per excellence although there are others of not less culinary value like the meat with vegetables stew, the chickpeas with cod or the Asturian Pote. In the confectionery, the doughnut-like biscuit of San Blas, the mouth-watering rice pudding and the custards are not to be missed not forgetting the rich Carbayon or the elaborated fine chocolates, of international renown.

The most important gastronomic festivals are:

-          Countryside Tuesday, with the giving out of a red sausage-stuffed bread roll, better known as the “bollu preñao”.

-          The Antroxu (carnaval). The typical dish of the day is a cabbage stew cooked with black and re sausages and some pork fat.

-          The Desarme whose meal for the day consists of chickpeas and cod broth as the main course followed by tripe and finish with thick rise pudding.
