HISTORY Long before Máximo and Fromestano settled in Oviedo, the territory had been inhabited by different people dating as far back as pre-historical times, leaving remains behind them of their staying in the land. In the Palaeolithic era they used to settle by the rivers in the centre of Asturias. When the weather conditions became more severe, these people moved their dwelling places and went to live into caves, where trace of their civilization has been found such are signs of their food, their tools and even their artistic expressions. Some of these important sites are the caves of Lluera and Las Caldas in Prioirio, and the one of la Viña en La Manzaneda, this one having a complete sequence of the upper Palaeolithic dating back 35.000 years. The establishment of Oviedo takes place on 25th November 761, and the first settlement in Oviedo, that is, the old monastery of San Vicente, is acknowledged. Throughout the Modern Age, Oviedo consolidated its cultural and political leadership which led to an urban development and the building of several palaces and ancestral homes. Later on, in the XIX century, the uprising against the French troops on 9th and 25th of May in 1808 was outstanding. That involved the siege to the Gauls. Asturias was marked by the Industrial Revolution in the XIX century since Oviedo was the focus of the social and trade unions tensions in the coal-mining areas. It was also protagonist in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) with sieges and resistances that went on for fifteen months. © Mediasur Networks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
