Oviedo and its council lay in the centre of Asturias, equidistant from both Llanes and Tapia de Casariego in opposite directions, the former towards Santander and the latter towards Galicia, and 25 km away from the beaches on the North and the mountain range of “Picos de Europa” on the South. The council has 186.65 km2 and its boundaries are: Llanera on the North; Siero and Langreo on the East; Mieres, Rivera de Arriba and Santo Adriano on the South and, Grado and Las Regueras on the West.
GERMORPHOLOGY AND RELIEF The council’s relief is a consequence of
the geological constitution and of the hydrographical erosion caused
by the rivers Caudal and Nalón which have bored through the
land causing deep slopes in it. POPULATION There were 900 inhabitants in Oviedo in the XIII
century (1263). By the XVII century (1646) the population had only
risen to 1.537 in the whole council. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
